Marco Benevento Releases “Greenpoint” free mp3 + video | Featured on NPR All Things Considered | Celebrate Brooklyn Date Announced

(New York, New York) — Brooklyn-based pianist/”sound sculptor” Marco Benevento continues to break ground with his third studio album, Between The Needles & Nightfall. The album’s opening track “Greenpoint” is being released today as a free mp3 accompanied by Benevento’s homemade video for the song. Click here for the track and video post on Consequence of Sound.

“‘Greenpoint’ came from a series of ideas that I wrote on a circuit bent keyboard. It managed to piece itself together over the last two years.  I had always thought about recording a tune that didn’t have many changes harmonically, but had a lot of variations in drum ideas, circuit bent sounds and amplified piano. Parts come in and out throughout the song. The initial idea arrived during a time when the only thing I could listen to was a Can record called Flowmotion,” explains Benevento. “‘Greenpoint’ is different every time we play it live.  I always find that the open-ended tunes are important because it opens the audience up to receive the moment as it’s happening and they can tell that you’re opened up too.”
Between The Needles & Nightfall was recorded at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento over three days. The material was drawn from fragments of melodies and song ideas that Benevento had been collecting throughout the year. To achieve the colors he envisioned for these compositions, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while adding flourishes of Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. Footage from the album sessions, captured during the final day of recording, is available, check out below

Marco Benevento, who was recently profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered, will also take part in this summer’s Celebrate Brooklyn concert series where he’ll re-score ‘The Fall Of The House Of Usher,” the ’60s film starring Vincent Price and based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story. The performance, scheduled for Friday, August 6, will feature Benevento playing his newly composed score along with the movie for a live audience. A full list of summer tour dates are below.

“…a musician so original that he can ultimately only be judged against his own standard.” – All Music Guide
“Marco Benevento is one of the most talented keys players of our time.” – CBS Radio Street Date
“Benevento employs various pedals and effects and progressive techniques in the creation of his songs, and they’re better for it. It’s done so expertly that the simplicity and cleanness of the composition belie how intricately and carefully crafted it actually is, and it’s what sets Between The Needles & Nightfall apart.”- URB
“Shot through with strong tunes and catchy hooks, Benevento’s music is instantly appealing, like the best pop, urgently pre-coital, like the best rock, and possesses real substance, like the best jazz. It has character and unpredictability–and it is ridiculously good fun.” – All About Jazz
“Between The Needles & Nightfall, an impressive new 11-track recording that has me pressing repeat each time it plays through to the end.” – The Hidden Track
“Between The Needles & Nightfall is intriguing and engaging, a dizzying mix of grounded Pop riffs and flights of experimental fancy, but in Marco Benevento’s skilled hands it all comes out accessible and magnificent.” – Cincinnati City Beat
“Benevento’s latest is a beautiful, psychedelic, jazzed out trip of an album.” – The Whiskey Dregs
“For all the enticing technical invention, Benevento can just as easily draw you in with one of his evocative melodic creations. Sophisticated reads on pop coexist with the influences of death metal and Nintendo on Between the Needles & Nightfall.” – Cleveland Scene
“In a version of Amy Winehouse’s ‘You Know I’m No Good’ Benevento recreates the raunchiness associated with the song by recording an old upright piano in a way that sounds like it was run through a Leslie cabinet. One song later, he’s playing a ballad that sounds like a post-modern version of Nashville pianist Floyd Cramer.” – Jazz Times
“New York-based keyboardist and celebrated experi-jazz man Benevento sounds energetic and consistently inspired on ‘Between The Needles & Nightfall.’ A good choice to impress your friends.” – Metromix
