October 17, 2012 Leave a comment

The Cult’s Weapon of Choice, the prequel to the album Choice of Weapon, is streaming on ARTISTDirect all this week.

Tuesday, October 16th The Cult released the largely anticipated ‘prequel’ to accompany their latest critically acclaimed album, Choice of Weapon. The digital-only release Weapon of Choice is a document of a work in progress and offers a unique opportunity to hear The Cult’s process. ARTISTDirect offers an exclusive premiere of Weapon of Choice all this week.

ARTISTDirect Exclusive Premiere – Weapon of Choice

The material on Weapon of Choice has not been previously released, and will be available exclusively on iTunes for two months only beginning today, October 16, 2012. The album will no longer be available anywhere starting on December 21, 2012.

The dynamic ten tracks on this release were recorded when The Cult returned to the studio in 2011 with producer Chris Goss and serve as a looking glass into the creative process and foundation behind Choice of Weapon.

These songs were turned over and over, forged in long rehearsals and writing sessions, and emanated from challenges both personal and professional,” said lead vocalist Ian Astbury. “We put our guts into this; Goss was able to create an environment where the songs were born through playing and turning over lyrics, through hard work and intense sessionsThese songs have an integrity and rawness of their own. In many ways it’s a different album to the one we released and reveals the foundations of Choice of Weapon. We were able to close the doors and begin to explore spaces we had not been in for a while.”

video ‘stache: Watch A Teaser From THE CULT

August 20, 2012 Leave a comment

The Cult have unveiled a haunting teaser from their upcoming film clip for the track, “Honey From A Knife,” which appears on the band’s critically acclaimed new album Choice Of Weapon.

The “Honey From A Knife” film clip will premiere on VEVO on August 23rd and a special trailer teasing the dynamic clip is up on their facebook page.

Shot in New York City by Rick Rogers (Prelude To Ruins) in a highly cinematic style, lead singer Ian Astbury says the new clip reveals a “desperate descent into a fractured psyche,” and the “Honey From A Knife” song title was inspired by the Buddhist precept:

“Wealth and beauty, to a man who will not relinquish them, are like a knife covered with honey which, even before he has had the pleasure of eating the honey, cuts the tongue of the child that licks it”.

The song, rooted in the seductiveness of addiction, has been singled out in numerous media reviews for its raw energy.

Of many positive live reviews The Hollywood Reporter observed the band’s live performance in New York City as having “returned with a vengeance” and referred to Astbury as “a menacing tyrant of cool”.

Choice of Weapon was released in North America on May 22 and debuted at #15 on Canada’s Current Album Charts, and #2 on both the Indie Chart and the Hard Chart. The Cult – vocalist Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Chris Wyse, and drummer John Tempesta recorded Choice of Weapon in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert and the band’s Witch Mountain studio.

audio ‘stache: THE CULT Release New Studio Album “Choice of Weapon” (Cooking Vinyl/MRI/RED Distribution)

Iconic British rock band The Cult have released their new album Choice of Weapon on May 22nd via Cooking Vinyl/MRI, the group’s first studio album in five years!

Co-produced by long-time Cult collaborator and producer Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush) and Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E.), the album was written by founding members Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy. Choice of Weapon is aimed at the heart of The Cult’s loyal following, and according to the members, it reflects their current discontent with the destruction of the world’s eco systems, search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives.

Read a recent interview from Rolling Stone to get a look into the making of the album. You can also watch the band’s live performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, here is “For The Animals,” “Wildflower” or watch the entire show!

“Offering catchy music with a twisted core, The Cult continue to thrive by sticking to their basic muse, and they are showing pretty much no signs of rust.” – Paste Magazine

Choice of Weapon is streaming week of release at AOL Spinner and is available digitally on iTunes, physically on Amazon and all other retailers. For tour, news and more information, follow The Cult online and visit www.thecult.us.

TV ‘stache: Super Bowl ad Features THE CULT

February 2, 2012 Leave a comment

The Cult’s ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ mash-up with Flo Rida’s ‘Good Feelin’ featured in Budweiser Super Bowl ad.

‘She Sells Sanctuary,’ the international hit from British rock band The Cult, and Sunshine State rapper Flo Rida’s Top 10 smash ‘Good Feelin,’ will be featured this Sunday as a mashup in one of Budweiser’s Super Bowl commercials. The song samples the late Etta James hit ‘Something’s Got A Hold On Me (Good Feeling)’ stay tuned during the Big Game.

The one-minute spot is a celebratory romp through several decades of great times in America that begins with the end of Prohibition in 1933.

Written by The Cult‘s vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ reached #15 on the UK charts and was a Top 40 dance hit in the U.S. In a review, one journalist wrote, “Duffy’s liquid, quasi-psychedelic guitar intro over a buzz of flanged feedback suddenly rips into a triumphant, driving lead melody that’s jaw dropping.”

Choice of Weapon, The Cult’s first new studio album in five years, will be released on May 22 (Cooking Vinyl), and the band – Astbury, Duffy, drummer John Tempesta, and bassist Chris Wyse – will tour extensively in support of it.
